Fundraising to support the repressed Belarusians

Foundation News

In May, thanks to your support, dozens of people received help when they needed it most.

April demonstrates the key point: the system works, help reaches people, and solidarity remains a real force.

Yelena and Sergey Movshuk were convicted for participating in the protests in Pinsk: the couple threw sticks in the direction of OMON officers. They were recognized as political prisoners and later expelled from the country. The couple are now facing health problems. Their children also remain in Belarus. They want to bring them to Lithuania and are asking for support.

Elena Fomina lives in Poland with her son. Although he is now an adult, he has had a disability since childhood and requires constant care. Elena has lost her stable job, takes on occasional work, and looks after her son full-time. She needs support to continue his treatment, keep their home, and overcome their financial crisis.

Tatiana is 54 years old. Before her arrest, she had a stable life: she worked as a chief accountant, owned her own apartment, and had just finished paying off her mortgage. But in March 2023, she was sentenced to four and a half years in a penal colony under nine politically motivated criminal charges.

During the violent crackdown on peaceful protests in Minsk, Mikhail was wounded and arrested. A few months later, he was sentenced to three years in an open correctional facility (“confinement in an open correctional facility”). After his release, constant persecution by the authorities made it impossible for him to rebuild his life in Belarus, and he and his girlfriend eventually fled to Poland.

Kirill and Karolina left Belarus for Lithuania after Kirill was sentenced to three years of “khimiya with assignment” in the “Hajun case.” Karolina has multiple sclerosis, and because of her health condition, she could not have survived four years without her husband. The couple is asking for support until they can work independently.

BYSOL fundraising

We are launching a fundraiser to support children of Belarusian political prisoners, timed to coincide with International Children’s Day and the start of the summer holidays. Every year, this assistance reaches children in Belarus and families who have been forced to leave the country.

Until August 2020, we, like all Belarusians, were engaged in our own projects, but we couldn't stay away when the country was gripped by a wave of violence and lawlessness. Now we help those who suffered at the hands of the regime.

A large number of volunteer veterans are forced to leave Ukraine quickly after completing their service due to issues with documents and legalization — many had their passports expire during service, and some already have families in Europe, as they were forced to leave Belarus due to persecution.

The project “Psychological Support for Children with the Experience of Emigration, Including Children with Autism” was launched by Fundacja Zachód Wschód Wsparcie to help children who have undergone major life changes grow into confident, calm, and happy adults.

The independent media project “Nottoday.media” has become a voice for stigmatized communities who are most often denied empathy by institutions: people struggling with addiction in exile, dissidents and activists, women and queer artists, representatives of counterculture and the underground scene.

The Ethnocultural Center “Svitаnak” was created to teach Belarusian traditions, folklore, and language. It gives Belarusians the opportunity to preserve their culture and identity in exile, and offers people from other countries a chance to discover Belarusian heritage. Due to funding difficulties, the center now faces the risk of suspending its core activities.

My name is Ilya Mironov. I am a former political prisoner who was forced to leave Belarus for Lithuania in 2023 urgently. In Vilnius, I organize concerts, creative evenings, and cultural events featuring Belarusian musicians who were forced to leave their homeland due to repression.

After persecution and being blocked in Belarus, the “Vitebsky Courier news” team continues to fight for the truth about their hometown. The project is now on the brink of closure – this fundraiser will help keep the newsroom running and launch new formats.
