Help for 64-year-old spouses in exile fleeing regime persecution

  • Story

Hello!
My name is Vyacheslav Krestin.

In May 2022, I was summoned to the police of Kamyanets, where I lived, allegedly being a party to a traffic accident. We went to the police station with my wife and there we realized that we were deceived. In fact, the call to the police station was connected with my comment under Alexander Nevzorov's post in Telegram.

Because of this comment I was prosecuted for insulting Lukashenka. Two officers of Brest GUBOP forced me to sign a confession. After that my wife was left for interrogation, while I was taken home, searched, my computer and phones were seized. They did not show me a warrant or a protocol and told me to stay at my place of residence and wait for the next call to the police. My wife and I realized that the next summons to the police in a criminal case would result in prison for me.

Therefore, we did not wait for new interrogations and trial, but urgently left Belarus in August 2022. We reached Poland through Georgia, and only then we could breathe out that we were free.

At the moment we are both wanted in Belarus and in Russia. As our acquaintances told us, in my home country I face 4 to 6 years of imprisonment (https://brestspring.org/tpost/lgpx3lz9j1).

My wife and I are each 64 years old: detention, escape and waiting for Polish visas have taken a lot of health from us. By this age, each of us has already accumulated a whole bunch of chronic diseases: I have problems with the respiratory system, my wife — with her legs. Realizing that our health in Poland would be difficult in the cold climate, we moved to a warmer climate in Spain in June 2023.

Not having a work permit, we lived on what I earned unofficially. I have now lost my job and our financial situation has become very difficult. We can't even use the small pension that my wife receives, as the card has expired and we can't get a new one.

We are asking for support to pay for the legal fees to obtain a work permit and legalization in Spain. While I am looking for another job, we are also short of money for rent, food and medication, which we need to take constantly.

Your help will allow us to keep our health and strength in the conditions of forced emigration.
We thank each and every one of you!
