“I Waited Nearly a Month for Surgery, and Now I Face Three More Months of Recovery”

  • Story

After I was expelled from Belarus together with a group of political prisoners in December 2025, I tried to rebuild my life from scratch. But this spring, an injury set me back, and now I need support.

My name is Valery Ivanin, and I am from Stolin. In October 2024, I was arrested on charges of inciting hostility and insulting Lukashenka. A year later, in December 2025, I was released as part of the group of 123 political prisoners. Through Ukraine and Lithuania, I eventually arrived in Poland. I immediately applied for protection because I understood that I would have to rebuild everything from the beginning, and no one was going to make life easier for me simply because I was a former political prisoner.

Things were gradually falling into place. I was looking for temporary jobs and waiting for my documents. But on Easter, I fell off my bicycle and dislocated my shoulder. It turned out that the injury could only be corrected through surgery. I had to wait almost a month for my turn, and in May I finally underwent the operation.

At first, my arm was immobilized in a sling. Now I have entered a three-month rehabilitation period. Without the use of my right arm, I cannot work, and I am also afraid of damaging something that is still healing. My documents and passport are still being processed, and even if I receive them tomorrow, I will not be able to earn a living because I am effectively without the use of one arm.

Right now, my priority is recovery so that I can support myself again. But somehow I need to get through these three months: pay for hospital care, medications, rehabilitation, and, most importantly, rent. I believe in myself and my ability to overcome difficulties, and I would never have asked for help if there were another way. There are many people who need support even more than I do. But the injury has already happened, and I can only hope that everything heals without lasting consequences.

I am asking for your support. Without income and without the ability to work, I risk losing my housing, and I simply have no one else to rely on.
