My name is Valery Stupachenko. This is not my real name, but one of the pseudonyms under which I have been writing for many years for independent Belarusan publications, including “Charter 97”.
On November 18, 2020, a criminal case was opened against me under Article 364 of the Criminal Code (violence or threat of violence against an employee of the internal affairs bodies). My apartment was searched, and a little later the list of charges was considerably expanded:
- slander against the president of Belarus (Article 367 of the Criminal Code);
- insulting the President of Belarus (Article 368 of the Criminal Code);
- insulting a representative of the authorities (article 369 of the Criminal Code);
- Discrediting the Republic of Belarus (article 369-1 of the Criminal Code);
- Use of foreign gratuitous aid (article 369-2 of the Criminal Code);
- Public calls to organize or hold unlawful assemblies (article 369-3 of the Criminal Code);
- organizing actions that grossly violate public order (article 342 of the Criminal Code).
I was forced to urgently leave Belarus and asked for political asylum in one of the EU countries.
However, I have health problems (probably because of all the worries and nerves). And age makes itself felt. It is hard for me to work, pay for housing and buy food.
