Hello. My name is Siarhei Sheleh. I’m 64 years old, a biologist, PhD, and a person who believed that a law-abiding life and quiet work in medicine would protect me from state abuse.
I graduated from the Faculty of Biology at Belarusian State University and worked as a researcher at the Institute of Hematology before moving into the private sector. My last job was as the head of Genzyme in Belarus. We focused on rare genetic diseases. I also have a son – he is now 11. I dreamed of taking him to the mountains, showing him Europe, teaching him everything I know.
On August 1, 2023, I was arrested. I was accused of donating to solidarity funds, independent journalists, and Ukrainian volunteers. Things that I saw as a matter of conscience and goodwill were labeled “terrorism” in court.
I was tried under three articles of the Criminal Code, including one that had already been repealed. On March 22, 2024, the Minsk City Court sentenced me to 8 years and 6 months of imprisonment, plus a fine of 600 base units – one of the harshest sentences for donations.
When I was released, I didn’t return to my previous life – I walked out into the unknown. What remains is the anxiety that won’t let go, not even at night. I don’t have even the basics: a proper jacket, comfortable shoes, a place to lock the door and try to feel safe again. Not even a phone that can run work apps or submit aid applications.
And so I’m asking for the most basic support.
Thank you to everyone!
