Irina Tretyakova, human rights activist: save my mom's life

  • Story

Hello!

My name is Iryna Tretiakova, I am a Belarusian human rights defender. For the last four years I have been providing legal and humanitarian assistance to Belarusians who have been subjected to political persecution.

And now I need your help myself.

February 16, 2021, about a hundred searches took place in Belarus. The law enforcers broke into the homes of human rights defenders, independent journalists and offices of organizations — this day was dubbed “Black Tuesday” in the media. My elderly parents' house in Vitsebsk, my registered address, was also searched.

In order not to expose my parents to danger and avoid the risk of imprisonment, I was forced to leave for Ukraine, where I continued my activities. With the beginning of the war in Ukraine, I moved to Germany, where until today I counsel Belarusians who have become victims of repression and help them find asylum and protection in the EU countries.

My departure was a heavy blow for my parents. Despite the fact that I left the country, the law enforcers continued to search my residence address. A criminal case was also opened against me under Article 342 part 2 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus (Article 342 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus — organization and preparation of actions that grossly violate public order).

In December 2023, my father had a heart attack and two stents were installed. My mom also developed serious heart problems. An examination showed that her heart vessels are 95%, 80% and 70% closed. She urgently needs aortocoronary bypass surgery.

There is a long waiting list for such an operation in Belarus, and mom may not wait. Constant fear and waiting for new searches only worsen her condition, increasing the risk of complications. Besides, the outcome of such operations in Belarus is often unpredictable due to the lack of qualified specialists and insufficient conditions. Taking into account my mom's age, the probability of complications is especially high.

That is why I decided to look for help abroad. After reviewing all the documents, the alliance of cardiac clinics in Germany Nordrhein-Westfalen Clinic Complex agreed to perform the operation. They are ready to start treatment as soon as I make a deposit of €60,000, which will cover the surgery, medical care and rehabilitation.

Unfortunately, I can't raise that amount of money on my own. And I can't abandon my mom either. All these years I have been fighting for justice and the rights of others, and now it is time to fight for the life of my dearest person. I believe in your support and sincerely ask for your help.

With hope,
Irina Tretiakova.

How much is needed?

€60.000

This amount includes:
Coronary bypass surgery: this procedure involves several complex interventions, but without the need for complex intensive care.

Coronary angiography: this examination will visualize the coronary arteries to assess their condition.
Pressure measurement and ventriculography: the procedure will measure the pressure in the heart and aorta, and visualize the aortic arch to assess its condition.  Aortic and coronary artery bypass: the patient's own artery, such as the internal thoracic artery, will be used to create a bypass around blocked areas of the coronary arteries.
