A Belarusian Woman Asks for Help Covering Her Daughter’s Rehabilitation

  • Story

Elena evacuated to Poland together with her family: her mother and two children. In exile, she faced difficulties with employment and housing costs, while her daughter also required treatment for a spinal condition. To consolidate the results of that treatment, the girl now needs paid rehabilitation, but the family’s savings have already been spent on medical care and rent.

You may remember me. My name is Elena Diner. I was forced to evacuate from Belarus to Poland because of political persecution. We moved as a large family: myself, my 67-year-old mother, my daughter (17), and my son (11). Thanks to your support through BYSOL, I was able to raise funds for housing when we first arrived.

At first, everything was going well. We applied for international protection, and the children started school. Until this year, I managed to pay our rent regularly. But in January, I lost my job. I immediately found temporary work, but the employer turned out to be dishonest and paid me much less than we had agreed. I only found a new job in March, and the salary barely covers food and basic necessities. Our only stable source of income is the allowance we receive as applicants for international protection.

Then, in February, new expenses arose. We urgently had to address my daughter’s health issues. She developed serious spinal problems. All examinations, ultrasounds, and MRI scans were provided free of charge, but we had to pay for rehabilitation ourselves, as the waiting list for free rehabilitation extends until the end of 2027.

This has put enormous pressure on our budget. It reached the point where we were evicted from our previous apartment. For now, we have found temporary accommodation, and the owner has agreed to give us some time before payment is due. But we will still have to pay, and I honestly do not know where to find the money.

I am in complete despair. I need to take care of my daughter’s health while also finding a way to secure housing so that our family can keep a roof over our heads. I could have managed one of these problems on its own, but when everything happened at once, it became overwhelming.

I will be endlessly grateful for any help.
