Due to Health Issues, Former Political Prisoner Cannot Support His Family

  • Story

In December of last year, Dmitry’s health problems – caused by his time in prison – worsened. He is now unable to work full-time and is asking for support to avoid losing his home and means of subsistence.

My name is Dmitry Nekrasov, I am from Brest. On August 10, 2020, I took part in peaceful protests, and on August 23, I was detained. A year later, I was sentenced to three years of imprisonment, which I served in Correctional Colony IK-1 in Novopolotsk. Those three years severely damaged my health. I was repeatedly placed in a punishment cell, where the conditions were extremely harsh.

On May 30, 2024, I was released and almost immediately faced threats from GUBOPiK officers. Fearing for my safety, I left Belarus in the summer of 2024: first to Georgia, and then to Poland, where I reunited with my family.

To support my family, I found a job at a carpentry workshop. I worked unofficially, as I was in the process of obtaining documents and planned to register as self-employed. After receiving a work permit, I hoped to gradually achieve a stable income.

Since the summer of 2025, I have been experiencing increasing pain in my neck and back, especially at the end of the workday and after physical activity. My muscles were in constant tension, and I experienced shooting pain in my head. Rest and massage provided temporary relief, but once I returned to physical work, the pain came back.

On December 3, 2025, my condition suddenly worsened. Early in the morning, I developed a severe headache, weakness, and a feeling of pressure in my head. By midday, the situation became critical: my face went numb, there was ringing in my ears, and then my arms and legs began to go numb. We called emergency services because the situation seemed dangerous.

Doctors preliminarily diagnosed a pinched nerve in the cervical spine, which caused severe pain syndrome. I was given a painkilling injection, but the constant dull pain in my neck did not go away. Since I worked unofficially, I could not receive paid sick leave. To continue treatment, I need to reduce my workload or stop working entirely—but then my family will be left without an income.

I am currently undergoing a three-month rehabilitation program with a professional specialist privately. One month costs about 1000 PLN. The therapy helps, but full recovery is impossible without taking a break from work. Physical exertion causes the pain to return and intensify.

Appointments with a neurologist are booked several months in advance, so I have to pay for all examinations and treatment myself. Because I cannot work fully, our financial situation has become critical. Our family does not have enough money even for basic expenses, including food. We are borrowing money to pay for housing and rehabilitation, and everything I manage to earn goes toward repaying debts.

When I was released from prison, I believed I could handle anything, but now I am forced to ask for help. I need to continue treatment, restore my health, and regain the ability to work normally so I can support my family and get out of debt.
