My name is Anzhela Leskovskaya. Now I see the world as blurred patches of color, I cannot work and cannot leave the house without assistance. An urgent cataract removal surgery can help me regain my sight and live and work independently again.
I am 58 years old. I lived with my family in Minsk. I worked as a chief accountant, then was engaged in business. After the 2020 elections, when I saw what was being done to people, I immediately got involved in helping those affected and in protest activities. My husband was a lawyer at the time. We participated in marches, courtyard and district initiatives. In September 2020 my husband was detained at a march and served three days. Some time later he was stripped of his lawyer’s license.
On November 30, 2022, силовики broke into our home. After a search and interrogation, I was detained. They tried to “spin me up” for participation in the district chat “Chizhovka,” but failed. They charged me with “disobedience to officers” and sentenced me to 15 days of arrest. I served the “days” at Okrestina and in Mogilev, in inhumane conditions. After that, I began to have serious health problems: kidney disease, a severe form of bronchitis, prolonged stress, and deterioration of my vision.
After my release, there was a real threat of criminal prosecution, and I had to urgently leave Belarus, because I would not have survived prison. Now my husband and I live in Poland. In recent years, my health, especially my vision, has deteriorated greatly. I began to rapidly develop cataracts in both eyes, and now I can barely see.
According to the doctor’s assessment, I have only 5–10% of my vision left. I need urgent surgery on both eyes with lens replacement. I do not have medical insurance because due to poor health I have not been able to find a job here, and my husband’s income barely covers rent and food.
Now the whole world for me is just multicolored patches. I cannot work, cannot move around normally, cannot even go out without assistance. I sincerely ask for your help to have the surgery and regain my sight. For me, this is a chance to live independently again and to be useful to my family and other people.
Medical documents available to BYSOL confirm the severe condition of Anzhela’s vision and the need for urgent surgery. The conclusion of a Polish medical institution diagnoses total cataract and functional blindness in both eyes. The doctor emphasizes the importance of urgent surgery on both the right and left eyes.
