The full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army has resulted in heavy casualties among both military and civilians.
In liberated villages and settlements, the Russian military deliberately leaves large quantities of ammunition, deliberately placing explosive devices, anti-personnel mines, booby traps in fields, bridges, dirt roads, forests, plantings, stores, houses, cars, toys, and even in people's corpses.
The UN estimates that it will take at least $250 billion to clear the territories after the victory: At least that's how much Ukraine will need for humanitarian demining of all land, including temporarily occupied land. Since about 300,000 square kilometers are mined, that's about 13% of the country's area. Complete demining will take five to seven years.
