The Belarusian community of Vilnius begins fundraising for the renovation of a monument to Frantisek Olekhnovich, a Belarussian playwright, theater worker, publicist and novelist whose novella “U kapciuroh GPU” is one of the earliest works of world literature that describes life in a Stalinist concentration camp directly from the perspective of a prisoner.
The temporary monument to Olekhnovich, which was erected back in 1993 by the Belarusian community of Vilnius, has been in a state of disrepair for the past few years. In 2021, the Belarusans in Vilnius decided to temporarily take the monument away to keep it from being completely destroyed. A wooden cross was temporarily placed in its place.
Lithuanian experts undertook the renovation of the monument. The idea is to renovate the original monument by Eduard Podberezsky and return it to its original state.
The latest news on this project and reports will be published here.
