Rental assistance to a political refugee for the period of recovery after surgery

  • Story

Good afternoon!

In Belarus, I worked in a state organization and at the same time helped journalists of Nasha Niva and Belsat as an expert. For this in Belarus, albeit in absentia, I am facing very serious criminal charges. And although I'm already safe and under international protection, my name is quite well-known in narrow circles. Therefore, I do not name it, as I want to protect my elderly parents from searches, seizure of property and interrogations.

In 2021, I was dismissed as “unreliable” along with some of my colleagues. Repression in the country was gaining momentum. Several people from my entourage were detained and are now serving sentences on political articles. Having weighed everything up, my wife and I, together with our small children, decided to leave Belarus without waiting for them to come for us. We went through Ukraine to Poland, where we applied for international protection and received refugee status.

Over the past few years we have more or less organized our lives: the children went to kindergarten and school, and I got a job as a laborer in a company manufacturing car parts. This job provided us with an official income, health and social insurance for the whole family.

Unfortunately, earlier this year I suffered a serious injury. In February, while walking with my children, I had an unfortunate fall and suffered a severe shoulder fracture. In the hospital I had surgery — the shoulder joint was literally put back together piece by piece with a titanium plate. A couple weeks later, it was discovered that the surgery had caused an infection in the wound, so I had two more surgeries to clean the wound, one after the other.
(BYSOL has supporting medical documentation)

I have been rehabilitating my shoulder for seven months now and am on sick leave. In July, I was fired because I was on a contractual basis. I was left without my main income, but continued to receive sick pay because I used to pay my own tax to get sick pay. With some small part-time jobs online, I was more or less coping with the situation. I even managed to occasionally donate through BYSOL to people who needed help.

At the end of August, I found out that since my sick leave lasted more than 182 days, my monthly payments were suspended. In order for them to continue, I needed a medical board's determination that I needed rehabilitation. It would take two to three months to review the application and make a decision.

At that point, I was hospitalized again for a month because of a complication at the fracture site. I had two more surgeries and my shoulder had to be re-treated.

Being temporarily unemployed and without sick pay, it is now very difficult for me to cope financially on my own. The main problem is my rent. I need help to pay the rent for two months until I recover and can work again.

From the bottom of my heart I will be grateful for every transfer!
