UPD: Sergey died. Assistance in the treatment of oncology for human rights lawyer Sergei Poduzov

  • Story

UPD: Unfortunately, Sergey passed away. The family is grateful to all donors and needs help for the extradition of the body and burial. As a result, the collection continues.

Since 1996, Sergei Poduzov has been helping victims of human rights violations, teaching and promoting the values of law and democracy, monitoring in different countries, often in very unsafe situations. Sergei is a co-founder and a co-chairman of the human rights organization “Man and Law”, a lawyer, and a human rights coach. He has collaborated with the UN, OSCE, and the Council of Europe. His organization in Russia has been declared “foreign agent”, and for several years in a row there were constant inspections, fines and threats, but he, like his colleagues, continued to work and protect people, despite all obstacles. Sergei is one of the brightest representatives of the Russian and international human rights community, for whom the values of human rights, the importance of human dignity and humanity are the basis both in life and in the profession. He participated in human rights projects related to Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Central Asia and others. For many years, he and his organization, among other things, have been working on the issue of torture and other ill-treatment, human rights violations in places of detention, and with unfair judicial proceedings.

Sergei is a great professional, friend, colleague and just a good, kind and honest person

A year ago, Sergei was diagnosed with stomach cancer; he underwent complex treatment, including surgery. The initial therapy showed positive results, but after contracting COVID-19 his conditions have worsened. Now he is in a Turkish clinic, this is the only possible option for effective help in the existing situation. It is urgently necessary to start another stage of expensive treatment. In total, he needs about $ 50,000. Sergei really wanted to cope with everything by himself and for a long time he did not agree to talk about his illness publicly. But now the situation is hopeless, and so we are turning to you for help.

On behalf of Sergei's family, his colleagues and friends in different countries, we decided to start fund raising to pay for his treatment at the clinic. The representative of the initiative group is Olga Salomatova, an expert of the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (you can contact her at: [email protected] ). We believe that it is important to do everything in our power to help Sergey. We could always count on him for his help

Sergei is used to helping, not asking for help for himself, so he did not agree to publicity for a long time. These are not big words, it’s just the way it is. But we, his family, his friends and colleagues, and all those whom he helped, with whom he worked, who knows him, need Sergei. He helped an incredible number of people in different countries and will still help. We are sure that he will get back on his feet and continue working for the benefit of human rights. We just need to help and support him now! We will be grateful for any amount and your solidarity!
