“We need a lot of money, and it’s running out.” Help for a Belarusian woman in exile: she has depression, her son has autism

  • Story

Because the child requires a lot of attention and effort, Irina does not work. The family lives only on the husband’s salary, but specialized training for the boy is expensive.

Hello. My name is Irina Kryuchkova. My husband, our child, and I came to Poland in 2024 to escape political persecution in Belarus.
In the spring of 2024, the police came to our home following a tip-off from a neighbor – she reported that my husband and I had taken part in the 2020 protests.

Fortunately, at that time it ended with just a visit from law enforcers. But a few months later we left for Poland. As it turned out, not in vain: in October my husband learned that he was wanted in a criminal case related to 2020. And in January 2025 it turned out that I was as well.

Although we are now safe, everything we went through has not passed without consequences: I was diagnosed with depressive and anxiety disorders. In addition, our son has health problems: autism, delays in mental, speech, and intellectual development, and high muscle tone. He needs a lot of attention, so I spend all my time with him. As a result, only my husband can work – he is a long-haul truck driver.

Caring for our son is expensive: procedures, specialized training, special footwear. In addition, I myself need psychiatric care. And since we live on a single salary, coping is difficult. There is also no one to expect help from. Both my relatives and my husband’s parents are against us. The latter have not seen their grandson even once.

And now my husband has started having health problems as well. At the beginning of January, during a trip, he lost consciousness right at the wheel, presumably due to a heart issue. But my husband does not drink alcohol and does not smoke. While doctors are figuring out what is wrong, he cannot work.

Therefore, our situation is difficult: we need a lot of money, and it is running out. My husband is very worried – he has always taken care of us, and now he cannot do anything. We have always helped those in need whenever possible, and now we ourselves have found ourselves in a difficult situation. We very much hope for your help.
