Hello! My name is Viktoria*, my father is a political prisoner. He was arrested for protests several years ago. At the trial he was sentenced to more than five years in a high-security correctional facility.
I was also detained, so after the “days in custody” I left Belarus and am now in exile. Currently only my mother can prepare care packages for my father. Her salary is catastrophically insufficient for this – she can spend around 400–450 euros at a time. She has to fall into debt. I help as much as I can, but it still doesn’t save the situation.
Morally, Dad is holding on, despite the heavy sentence and health problems. He has lost a lot of weight and suffered a severe case of COVID. In his letters he often asks about us, asks us to tell him more about what is happening in our lives.
And we continue to worry about him. For yet another year we barely celebrate holidays, every birthday we wait for a call from him – but nothing. Soon there will be yet another New Year that we will spend without Dad. Sitting at the table and thinking about how he is there now, whether he is okay.
All we can do for him is prepare care packages to somehow ease this unjust detention. That is why I am asking you very much to help.
