A Belarusian Woman Needs Help to Secure Asylum in the United States and Avoid Possible Deportation

  • Story

In 2020, Daria was detained for a day during the protests in Belarus. She managed to leave the country before a criminal case was opened against her. Now she is waiting for a decision on her political asylum application in the United States. To improve her chances, she hired a lawyer.

My name is Daria Savchenko, and I have found myself in a difficult situation.

In 2020, I actively participated in protests and volunteered. Because of this, in December 2020 I was detained and sentenced to 14 days of administrative arrest. During that time, I went through the detention center on Akrestina Street and the police department in Baranovichi.

Some time later I was forced to leave Belarus, as repression was intensifying and I feared being imprisoned again. After I left, so-called “law enforcement officers” conducted searches at my parents’ home. They suspected me of administering the Telegram group “Punishers of Belarus.” At that moment I realized that leaving the country had been the right decision.

I am currently living in New York, where I have applied for political asylum. I am still waiting for a decision, and my immigration court hearing is scheduled for mid-April. However, in our state it is common for the process to take several years.

The court decision will determine my future. If the ruling goes against me, deportation proceedings may begin. To avoid that risk, I hired an immigration lawyer who will represent my case. Unfortunately, legal services here are extremely expensive, and the cost is beyond what I can afford on my own.

I have already managed to raise most of the required amount, but not all of it. That is why I am asking for your support.

Even a small contribution can make a difference. Thank you to everyone who chooses to help.
